Follow these tips to choose the right nursing home

If you have elderly parents who can no longer live on their own, you might be considering moving them into a nursing facility. While making this decision is often difficult, finding the right facility can be hard as well. While you want to move them to a nursing home that is both comfortable and affordable, you also want one that is safe.

Choosing the right facility can put your mind at ease when it comes time to move your parents out of their home. The following tips can help you select the right nursing home.

Determine the budget

The first thing you need to do is determine how much your parents can pay for a nursing home. This means you will have to carefully examine their finances and calculate their monthly budget. If necessary, you may need to evaluate certain assets, such as their home, and consider selling it in order to have funds to pay for the facility.

Decide on a level of care

What kind of care do your parents need? Do they simply need a little assistance with their daily activities or do they need to live in a facility that provides medical services such as rehabilitation? Once you determine the budge and the level of care your parents need, you can start looking at facilities.

Take a tour

When you have a list of potential facilities, visit each one in person before you make your decision. On each visit, you should ask a number of questions. For instance, how does the food look and taste? What kinds of sounds do you hear in the facility? Do you smell stale urine or other smells that should not be present? Is the facility understaffed or does the staff seem overworked? What do residents do for recreation?

Also, look for signs on of bruising and lack of personal care on the residents. These questions and observations can help you mark potential facilities off the list or select the right one.

Speak up

No matter how great a facility seems to be, keep in mind that you will have to act as your loved ones' advocate. If something is not right, speak up on behalf of your parents and continue to insist that they receive the care they need.

If you have elderly parents who can no longer care for themselves, you might be searching for the right nursing facility in the Atlanta area. The above tips can help you choose the right home for their needs so that you can properly plan for nursing home care.
