Watch out for these red flags when you visit a nursing home

When you're looking for a nursing home for your loved one, it is important that you find the right one. It may take weeks to find the right nursing home and seeing it for yourself in person is imperative.

All of the statistics and pamphlets in the world can't take the place of a visit to a nursing home. You want to go there to make sure that the facility is a place where you truly believe your loved one's needs will be met.

To avoid trouble, it's important to know some possible red flags at nursing homes that tell you that the facility may not be the right choice for you. Here are three to watch out for.

1. It's chaotic

Walking into a nursing home and immediately observing chaos can be a significant red flag. Listen for overhead paging, which can be bothersome to residents of the nursing home. Watch for nurses or other staff members rushing from one place to another while patients are left alone. You want to find a place that seems calm, collected and organized, not one that seems like it's barely held together.

2. The staff isn't respectful

The way the staff speaks with you is a great indication of how they'll act toward your loved one. Are they dismissive? Are they short-tempered or aggressive? If so, this may not be a great facility for your loved one.

3. There are restrictive visiting hours

In the past, visiting hours were used to restrict access to patients during times when they needed rest or treatments. Today, this is seen as an old-fashioned concept. As long as you plan to come to the nursing home at a reasonable time, there should be no reason that you can't see your loved one. If the visiting hours are too strict for you, then it's time to look for a different facility.

These three red flags are just some of many that you should look for when you're visiting and exploring local nursing homes. You want to find a nursing home that has staff that is not overworked and that is respectful and professional to you and your loved one. You want to find a place with reasonable visitation times and those that offer a number of services to your loved one. If you continue to look with high expectations, you will find an appropriate nursing home to provide care for your parent or other family member.
